■ hone one's skills　　～の技能を磨く
A: Is this the same cake you made last week?
B: Yes. Do you like it?
A: Mmm. It’s much better than last time. You’ve really been honing your skills in the kitchen.
A: これは先週作ったケーキですか？
B: そうです。おいしいですか？
A: とっても。前のよりだいぶおいしいです。料理の腕を本当に磨いたね。

■　pay off　　　成果をあげる、報われる
A: Amazing. How long did it take you to enclose your whole backyard with mosquito netting?
B: About one week. But the time & effort have really paid off. I can now sit outside all evening and not get bitten once!
A: すごい。裏庭まるごと蚊帳で囲いをするにはどれくらいの時間がかかったんですか？
B: 一週間ぐらい。でもその時間と努力は本当に期待の成果をあげました。いまは夜ずっと外に座っていられるし、一度も刺されていないよ！

The CEO's remark that the company would open its next factory in Antarctica raised more than a few eyebrows at yesterday's meeting.
昨日の会議で社長が、次の工場は南極大陸にオープンするといったことでびっくりした人は少数だけではなかったです（たくさんいました）。
