■ a passing fad　　一時的流行
When movies with sound appeared in the 1920's, some silent film directors mistakenly believed that these so-called "talkies" were only a passing fad.
音声つきの映画が1920年代に登場したとき、サイレント映画の監督のなかには、いわゆる「トーキー」は一時的流行にすぎないと間違って信じた者もいた。

■ discourage one from doing ～　　＜人に＞～するのを思いとどまらせる
Before you attempt to climb the mountain, you should know of its many dangers:
