Mr. Clark: Jeff, the shareholders' meeting is tomorrow and you're going to chair it. What's the first item on the agenda?
ジェフ、株主総会が明日あって、君がその司会を務める。議題にのぼっている最初の項目はなんだね？

Jeff: Well, I thought that instead of our usual presentation of financial statements, maybe I could kick things off with a funny story or two, -- you know, to get them in the mood.
あの、いつもの財務報告の発表の代わりに、ひとつ二つ面白い話で始めようかなと思っています――なぜなら、みんなの気分をのせるために。

Mr. Clark: "Get them in the mood"? For what?
「みんなの気分をのせるため」だって？　何のための？

Jeff: For the next part of the meeting: our balance sheet. Of course, I know they'll be very intent on hearing why sales have been so slow, what progress we've made there, and so on. Oh, and they're bound to raise the issue of whether or not to cut executive bonuses.
総会のつぎの部分のためですよ：　バランスシート(貸借対照表)です。もちろん、彼らはなぜ販売がそんなに振るわなかったのか、そのさいにわが社がどんな進展をしてきたのか、などを聴くことにとても熱心になることがわかっています。あっ、それから彼らは取締役のボーナスを削減すべきかどうかの問題をきっと提起しますよ。

Mr. Clark: Yes, I don't particularly favor the idea, but perhaps we can't put off the decision any longer.
そうだ、その考えに特に賛成はしかねるが、おそらく我々はもはやこれ以上決断を延ばすことができない。

Jeff: Well, maybe we can. I mean, if we play up some of the positive aspects & company achievements from the past year, then we might be able to buy some time.

Mr. Clark: "Positive aspects"? "Company achievements"? Like what?!

Jeff: Well... Ummm, let's see now. Ahh ....
あの……えーと。じゃあ、ええっとですね。あぁ……。

Mr. Clark: That's what I thought. You'd better tell a few more funny stories.
やっぱりそうでしょう(何もいえないでしょう)。面白い話をもう少し増やしたほうがいいぞ。
