Noriko: Jeff, you don't look well. Did you catch cold?

Jeff: No. I went out for drinks last night with some friends. They were going to some new bar and asked me to come along.
(いや。友達と昨晩飲みに出かけたんだ。彼らはどこか新しいバーに行くつもりで僕に一緒に来るように求めたんだ)。
Noriko: Ah, a hangover.
(あぁ、二日酔いね)。
Jeff: Yes. I was making efforts to hide it but I guess it shows.
(うん。それを隠す努力をしていたけど、それってわかっちゃうと思うよ)。
Noriko: How much did you have?
(どれくらい飲んだの？)
Jeff: Quite a bit. The problem was that although we had decided to split the bill 6 ways, one of us -- named Markus -- drank more than half of the beer! Well, this went against all our principles! So in return for this, after we paid the bill, we went to another bar, poured drink after drink, then had Markus take care of the whole bill there.
(かなり。問題は勘定を六人で割り勘にすることに決めてあったのに、僕たちの一人が ―― マーカスっていう人 ―― ビールの半分以上も飲んでしまったんだ！ それで、これって僕たちの方針に反した！ それでこのお返しに、勘定を払った後で、別のバーに行って、次から次に酒をつぎ、それからマーカスにそこでの勘定を全て払わせたよ）。
Noriko: Oh, poor Markus!

Jeff: No no! It was a fair punishment, I think. You see, whenever we decide
to split the bill, he always tries to drink as much and as quickly as possible. In fact, he does it on a regular basis!
(いや、いや！ それは公平な罰であったと思うよ。ねえ、僕たちが勘定を割り勘にすると決める時はいつでも、彼はできるだけ沢山そして素早く飲もうといつもするんだ。実際、彼は定期的にそうしてる)。
