■ spell ～ ( = mean ～ )　　意味する、きたす、～になる
Inviting Hal to a party or any type of social gathering spells trouble. He always drinks too much, then starts heated arguments with people.
ハルをパーティーや懇親会のような類のものに招待すると面倒な結果になります。彼はいつも飲み過ぎて、それから人と激論を始めるのです。

■ put ～ on the back burner　　～を後回しにする、～を二の次にする
The bad economic conditions have led Kenji to put his plans to start his own company on the back burner for a while. He'll continue to work for his present employer at least until the economy improves.
悪い経済状況はケンジに自分の会社を立ち上げる彼の計画をしばらく後回しにする気にさせました。彼は経済が少なくとも好転するまで自分の現在の雇い主のところで働き続けるでしょう。

■ get down to ～　　～に取りかかる
Mary and Sue made plans to meet at a coffee shop at 1 p.m. to study for the next day's test together. It wasn't until 3:00, however, that they finally got down to studying.
メアリーとスーは翌日のテストのために一緒に勉強しようと午後１時に喫茶店で会う計画を立てました。とはいえ３時になってやっと彼女たちは勉強にようやく本気で取りかかったのです。

A: Can you substitute for me at work tomorrow?
A friend will be in town for one day only and I promised that I would show him around.
B: OK, but only if you substitute for me twice.
A: You drive a hard bargain but ... it's a deal.
A:　明日仕事で私の代役をつとめることができますか？　友だちが一日だけ町にいて、だから彼を案内して回ると約束しちゃったんだ。
B:　いいですよ、でもあなたが二度私の代わりを務める場合に限ってね。
A:　自分に有利な取引をするね、しかし …… よし、話は決まった（取引成立だ）。
