ジョンソンさんのその議題に関する熱のこもった講演は、聴く者たちを驚かせて彼らに行動を起こさせました。

■ hardly do ～　　ほとんど～しない
A: Has Jack finished painting your house yet?
B: Finished?!! It's been 2 days and so far, only one small wall is done. He's hardly done anything!
A:　ジャックはキミの家にペンキをもう塗り終えましたか?
B:　終えただって?!!　２日かけてやっとここまで、小さな壁１枚が終わっているだけだよ。彼はほとんど何もやっていないんだ。

■ stave off　　　避ける、延ばす、かろうじて食い止める
When dieting, one idea to stave off hunger is to drink green tea.
ダイエットしているとき空腹をしのぐには、お茶を飲むのは一案です。

■ come to an understanding (with ～ ) = reach an agreement (with ～ )
（～と）合意に達する
John, I really like your 2 dogs but their barking at night often keeps me awake. We need to (sit down and) come to some understanding on this problem.

A: Did you ever get that gas grill you were talking about?
B: No. After hearing how difficult they were to clean, I ended up buying a charcoal one instead.
A:　キミが話していたあのガスグリルを結局買うことになったの?
B:　いえ。手入れがとても面倒だと聞いて、その代りに炭火グリルを買うことになりました。

■ (one)'s way of saying that ～　　（人の）～であるという言い方
A: I couldn't believe it! My cat, Mr. Billingsworth, brought a dead mouse into the house and dropped it right at my feet!
B: Maybe that's his way of saying that he likes you.
A:　信じられなかったわ!　私の猫、ミスター・ビリングズワースが死んだネズミを家の中に持ち込んで私の足元にそれを落としたのよ。
B:　それってキミを好きだっていっているのかも。

■ have ～ in mind　　～を計画している、～のことを考えている
A: Instead of staying home this evening, why don't we go out and do something?
B: OK. Do you have anything in mind?
A: Yes. I'd love to see that new movie.
A:　今晩家にいる代わりに、外出して何かしない?
B:　いいよ。何か考えているのか?
A:　ええ。あの新作映画を見たいのです。
