Noriko: Jeff, I know what "greenhouse gases" are and that we have to focus on cutting them, but why do you call them that?
(ジェフ、私は温暖化ガスが何かそしてそれらを削減することに集中して取り組まなければならないと分かっているけど、でもなぜそう呼ぶの？)

Jeff: Well, as you know, a greenhouse is a building with glass walls & ceilings where you grow plants.
(そう、ご存知のとおり、グリーンハウスとは植物を栽培するガラスの壁と天井のある建物のことだよ)。


Noriko: Yeah! In Japan, we say "onshitsu". But what's the connection
between a greenhouse and global warming?
(そうね！　日本では、「温室」と言うのよ。だけどグリーンハウスと地球温暖化との関係は何かしら？)


Jeff: Well, the air inside a greenhouse gets hot and has nowhere to go. So that's kind of what's happening to the atmosphere today -- you know, at a global level.
(えーと、グリーンハウスの内部の空気はどこにも行くところがなくてあつくなるんだよ。それでそれが今日の大気圏にいわば起こっていることなんだ……地球規模でね)。


Noriko: Right. So I have a good idea. Maybe all the world leaders should get together and participate in talks inside a greenhouse!
(そうね。それでいい考えがあるの。世界中の指導者たちが一緒になって温室内での会談に参加したらいいんだわ)。


Jeff: Perfect! And in the middle of summer, too! If they did, I think it's safe to say that they would definitely feel the heat! I can see the headline now: "World leaders fight greenhouse gases inside greenhouse!"
(すばらしい！　しかもまた、真夏にね。それなら、彼らが確かに暑さを思い知るに違いないよ。もう見出しが想像できる:「世界のリーダーたちは温室内で温室効果ガスと闘う！」)

Noriko: Yes, I think they'd REALLY focus on resolving the issue then. At any rate, it's something we ALL should at least keep in mind.
